My computer is under virus attack, and I can’t run the anti-virus software. What should I do?

Jack asked:

I am a Chinese and my computer is running on Windows XP Simplified Chinese version. The virus surely recognizes Chinese words for “anti-virus software” bacause every time I type in such words in Google, the whole page shuts down. And I can’t run the anti-virus software so that I can’t kill the virus. I suspect that it is an adware, because certain webpages just pop up suddenly from time to time. Can anyone tell me what I should do now?

Boot into Safe Mode. When Windows first turns on (before you see anything on the screen) hit the F8 key repeatedly. If you need to update your antivirus and antispyware, select Safe Mode with Networking, otherwise, just select Safe Mode. When Windows boots, run a scan.

You need both antivirus and antispyware. If you don’t have the latter, you can get a free copy of Windows Defender (made by Microsoft) to get your computer back to normal.

An adware can’t be powerful enough to disable your antivirus. It could be some other type of malware – so I’ll recommend you to get a free antimalware program like A-squared Free, update it and scan your computer :

Or you could do an online scan-and-remove, like the HouseCall from Trend Micro:
    :)

format hard drives and reinstall windows. that will help for sure.
you can also download antivirus or antispyware on a friend’s computer and put the install on cd or thumbdrive and bring it on your computer this way.
